The bank was founded in October 1937 as General Bank of Greece. In January 1985 Bank’s shares are started to trading on the Athens Stock Exchange.
On March 5, 2004 the international finance gropup Société Générale Group becomes the largest shareholder with 50.01% (then increased to 52.32%) and bank was renamed to Geniki Bank.
On 14 December 2012, tPiraeus Bank announced that it has completed talks with Société Générale for the acquisition of a majority stake in General Bank. Thus, the General Bank became a member of the Piraeus Bank Group.
Today, the General Bank, operates 149 branches in Greece, while in the group are five subsidiaries provide specialized banking, financial, insurance and other services.
